Bushwalking and Nature Viewing

One of the best ways to see the outdoors is to bush walk through them. Pack a picnic, map and camera and discover the breathtaking backdrops and diverse natural environments. The region boasts numerous unique national parks with dozens of walking tracks and opportunities to view rare and endangered wildlife.

In Sundown National Park, look for river red gums, king orchids, and more than 130 species of birds including red-capped robins, honeyeaters, parrots, ducks and herons.  Grey kangaroos, red necked wallabies, great gliders and over 100 species of birds are resident at the Bald Rock National Park.

Girraween, meaning 'place of flowers' is home to many species of flora and fauna such as flannel flowers, wombats, superb lyrebirds, blue wrens and rare turquoise parrots.  Go spotlighting at night to see ringtail possums high in the eucalypt trees.

At Goomburra watch for koalas, platypus and echidnas, and perhpas you will catch a glimpse of the less common mountain brushtail possum and feather tail glider.  Goomburra is also a special area for rare and endangered frogs. Goomburra is noted for its bird population, look out for satin bowerbirds, variegated fairy wrens, king parrots or listen to the calls of the bellbirds and shy yellow-tailed black cockatoos. Queen Mary Falls, is home to an array of fauna and Spring Creek provides a home to water dwellers such as the platypus and red spiny crayfish, as well as Eastern water dragons.  Animals living in the treetops include possums and gliders while native rats, wallabies, bandicoots, echidnas and pademelons reside on the forest floor.  The vulnerable brush-tailed-rock-wallaby is one of the rare animals in the park, however is rarely seen by visitors.  About 100 bird species have been found in the park, including the shy and rare Albert's lyrebird.  King parrots, crimson rosellas, golden whistlers and satin bowerbirds are commonly seen in the rainforest gorge.

The Morgan Park Resource Reserve in Warwick is also a great location for bird watching with over 50 species of birds, including kingfishers, fairy-wrens, honeyeaters, cockatoos, lorikeets, parrots, rosellas, raptors, quails.
